Let it snow...expecting 15 inches overnight, but we are still kicking off the month tonight with a "town hall" meeting with Senator Begich in the theatre, as well as hosting First Friday Alaskan artist Jen DePesa up in the Pub.

Brewer Greg Mills expects our Belgian IPA to be ready this month; the Belgian yeast strain will make this one super fruity.

Winter Happy Hour is going strong; half-price appetizers from 3-6 p.m. every day, and 9-close on Friday and Saturday nights. We added Calamari, our Cayenne-Bourbon-Peach BBQ Ribs, and Blackened Salmon in Ginger Cream with Mango Salsa to our "Specials" menu.

Our $3 pint of the week is the Urban Wildernesss Pale Ale; and we've added four wines by-the-glass: Yalumba unwooded chardonnay, Mohua sauvignon blanc, Leese Fitch merlot, and H3 cabernet. By the bottle our Captain's List now includes La Crema chardonnay and Newton claret.

Cellar Raider Round II, Local’s Night, First Friday, and More!

Darker days are back and the snow has begun to dump!  I am personally thrilled that we’re heading into winter – it’s when Alaskans can really enjoy being Alaskan.  The Snow Goose has many festivities and fun events to entertain you after a long day out enjoying the cold, starting with our increasingly popular Local’s Night Wednesdays! Come by every Wednesday to enjoy free fries, select $3 pints, and prize drawings. (Who doesn’t like prizes!?)

Another Goose event to put on your calendar is the much-anticipated “Cellar Raider Round Two” – once again we’re unearthing some amazing and unique beers and we’re sharing them with the world!  Many of these beers cannot be found anywhere else in Alaska, so you definitely don’t want to miss this one.  It’s all happening next Thursday night in the pub starting at 5pm.  Live bluegrass music from 7 – 9pm to add to the festivities – it’s sure to be an exciting night!

Tonight’s new First Flight is also bound to excite beer lovers, featuring our new Vienna Lager, Honey Cream Ale, and the much-loved classic Urban Wilderness Pale Ale.  Also, don’t miss our November First Friday Art show featuring acrylics on canvas by John Hagge, on display tonight and all month long.

Hope to see you here at the Goose – get out there and enjoy your winter weekend!

Fall Is Here…

The summer has long since slipped away and it’s time to prepare for the Alaskan winter, like it or not!  If you’re part of the ‘not’ camp, don’t fret -- there are plenty of things to look forward to at the Goose that will keep you entertained, well fed, and happy throughout the winter months.  We’re kicking off October with what might be the most amazing flight ever: an IPA trio featuring our Fish On!, Citra Wet Hop, and Double Black IPAs.  The Citra Wet Hop is an especially exciting endeavor for us here at Sleeping Lady Brewing Company -- made with fresh green hops it’s the first of its kind in our brewery’s history!

New First Friday artwork tonight features images by Brendan Smith, a talented photographer who has lived in Alaska for 8 years capturing the mountains, coastline, and animals that call it home. Brendan’s work has been featured at the Alaska SeaLife Center and the Journal of Marine Mammal Science. His photographic assignments have included the Alaskan arctic, the Russian Far East, New Zealand, and Cuba.

Make the trip downtown tonight and all month long for a great show and some tasty brews!

Fur Rendezvous & St. Patrick’s Day Fun!

Fur Rondy is a favorite time of year for many Alaskans.  Happy crowds fill downtown streets in festive winter gear, cheering on dogsled teams, eating, playing, and celebrating what will hopefully be winter’s last big hurrah.  Being on 3rd Avenue, the Snow Goose is at the center of the action and loving it!  Fireworks night has come and gone, but this year’s “Monster Melodrama” is still in full swing and reviews have been nothing but positive.  If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t wait much longer!  The Iditarod’s ceremonial start is set for tomorrow morning and if this wind keeps up you’ll surely need a place to go in from the cold.  The Snow Goose has all you could want on a winter day – I suggest this month’s special: Chicken Andouille Gumbo, Creole style with just a tiny kick to take off the chill.

This month’s First Friday artist, Amanda Faith, is also looking forward to warmer days with her exhibit “Signs of Spring” showcasing mixed media works.  Her featured silk collage couldn’t be a better fit for the Snow Goose – see below!

Sleeping Lady brewer Greg Mills has officially tapped his 2011 Cherry Grand Cru, last year’s silver medal winner in the “Other Belgian-Style Ale” category at the World Beer Cup.  Come try a glass; the tart brew is also featured in this month’s First Flight alongside our Scottish and Oatmeal Stout.

Don’t forget to come by the pub on March 17th for St. Patrick’s Day festivities complete with green beer, Reuben sandwiches, and more!

Snow Goose Chef Takes Home Trophy at Third Annual “Soup’r Bowl” Competition

The Anchorage Cabaret, Hotel, Restaurant and Retailers Association (CHARR) held their third annual “Soup’r Bowl” competition Saturday, February 5th, benefitting the Anchorage Hospitality Foundation at the Howard Johnson Hotel. The competition attracted twenty chefs from twenty leading restaurants around Anchorage in a ‘battle-of-the-soups.’  Among all entrants, the Snow Goose Restaurant was honored with the title of best in its category (Cream) as well as the most coveted, “Best Overall,” beating out competitors from Club Paris, Muse, Orso, Ginger, the Marx Bros. Café, and more.

The Snow Goose Restaurant was awarded the grand prize for their Smoked Salmon Corn Chowder, which gets its distinct flavor from pureed Guajillo chiles and oven roasted corn.  A sprinkling of smoked salmon and a slice of avocado top off the dish.

Robert Bonilla, Snow Goose Restaurant’s Head Chef, served his soup at the competition and graciously accepted his prize: “It is an honor to win best soup, and I am very pleased that we were recognized… I had a great time – I look forward to competing with all the great chefs next year.”

The Smoked Salmon Corn Chowder is the Snow Goose’s signature soup, and can be found on the menu year-round.  Stop by to sample the winner for yourself!

'Local's Night' Success and Preparations for a Great Fur Rondy Season

Once again another month has whizzed by and I find myself with so much to talk about!  As always, the new month brings a new local artist to the Goose: Sioux Blackledge has prepared her wonderfully colorful “Aborigine Floral Dot Art” for display and will hold a reception in the pub from 5:00 – 7:00pm on the evening of February 4th.  Come meet the artist and check out her highly original pieces.  February's “First Flight” is going back to basics – a classic Sleeping Lady trio of our Fish On IPA, Bravehart Scottish, and Portage Porter to tempt you.  If you haven’t tried them recently, it’s definitely time to revisit these three favorites.

In Alaska, February means Fur Rondy, and Fur Rondy means Melodrama at the Snow Goose!  The dedicated cast is already hard at work preparing for their anticipated performance of “The Merry Monsters of Matsylvania” featuring the Alaska Sound Celebration Chorus.  Tickets always sell out so make sure to get yours early by visiting CenterTix.net or by calling 263-ARTS.

Looking for a cozy place to enjoy Valentine’s Day?  The Snow Goose will be open from 4:00pm – 10:00pm, Monday, February 14th – call ahead to make reservations (277-7727).

Last but certainly not least – Local’s Night Wednesdays will now continue through February!  January’s weekly events featuring complimentary popcorn, free fries, select $3 pints, prize drawings, and a festive atmosphere were a grand success and we’re thrilled to keep it going for all to enjoy.  Come by and see for yourself!

Hope to see you here this month!

A portion of the Old Gander was originally made in 2007 and has been quietly aging since. The blend includes beer that was aged for more than a year in retired Jack Daniels American Oak barrels and beer that was aged over six months in former red wine American Oak barrels.”

And speaking of Barley Wine, the Great Alaska Beer and Barley wine fest is just around the corner – get your tickets now before they sell out!  Go to www.ticketmaster.com to purchase.  $35 for Friday and Saturday nights, $45 for Saturday afternoon’s Connoisseur Session.

See you there!

Holiday Happenings at the Goose

Poinsettias, garlands, and candles fill the pub this evening with cheery holiday artwork by our new First Friday artist, Dawn Gerety, to boot!  Colorful, whimsical fauna cover the canvases of these original pieces, which, by the way, would make great holiday gifts!  Come by the Goose anytime during the month of December to take in the cheer of the season or pick up a few paintings for family and friends.  Head chef Robert has also whipped up some seasonal dishes for all to enjoy this month, including the seared duck salad, herb-crusted prime rib, and peppermint cheesecake.  Absolutely delicious.

Speaking of delicious, head brewer Greg Mills has been hard at work concocting several appropriately wintery beers, three of which will be featured in our First Flight this month. The Baltic Porter, Portage Porter, and John Henry Stout make up “a dark flight to celebrate the longest night of the year” to put it simply, and are a must-try for all fans of chocolatey, toasty, malty brews.

Pumpkins Galore! Pumpkin Charity Art Contest & Auction, Pumpkin Ale, Pie, and Soup!

Things are busy down at the Goose!  So much to set up and so many fun new things to see and taste!  This Friday we’ll debut our Pumpkin Art Contest, with festive pieces of artwork donated by local artists -- on display through the 29th.  Come by anytime to vote for your favorite piece – it’s up to you who will win our grand prize!   On the evening of the 29th a silent auction will be held and each piece of artwork will go home with the highest bidder.  Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Armed Services YMCA of Alaska, Alaska Guardian Angel Program, which provides emergency assistance to military families in need (http://www.asymcaofalaska.com/programs/guardianangelprogram.html).  Don’t miss your chance to take home an original piece of artwork and support a great cause! Auction will begin at 6:00 pm and end at 10:00 pm.

The fun fall festivities don’t stop there:  In honor of the season, our brewer Greg has made up a batch of the most thirst-quenching, delectable pumpkin beer on record (according to yours truly)!  “It’s the Great Pumpkin” Ale is fittingly deep orange in color, made with small, flavorful pumpkins that were roasted in-house and pureed.  With a silky texture from the oats and a spicy character from the rye, this unique brew is perfect for fall, and will be on tap tomorrow night to help kick off our pumpkin art show!

Also on the menu this month is our new pumpkin soup – hot and creamy with subtle flavors of nutmeg and cinnamon, it’s a great choice for crisp October evenings.  If it’s dessert that interests you, however, try our traditional pumpkin pie or our own pumpkin bread pudding.  Both are delicious and sure to satisfy the most severe of pumpkin cravings!

Don’t miss all the pumpkin-filled goodness we have to offer at the Goose this month: Great artwork, great brews, great food, and a great cause! You won’t be disappointed.

The Snow Goose Celebrates Fall with Pumpkin Ale, Pumpkin Pie, and a Pumpkin Art Contest!

The Snow Goose Restaurant is gearing up for fall with seasonal favorites!  Assuming we can find 150 lbs. of local 'pumpkin pie' pumpkins in the next week or so, our two amazing brewers, Greg and Matt, will be whipping up a batch up delicious, fresh pumpkin ale for our enjoyment!  I'm also looking forward to the tasty pumpkin pie and pumpkin soup that will appear on our menu shortly... what a great trio!

In keeping with the pumpkin theme, the Snow Goose will also be holding a Pumpkin Art Contest.  Anyone is welcome to enter, and all participants are eligible to win $200 in prizes! ($100 gift card to the Snow Goose as well as a $100 gift card to Blaine's Art Supply).  Interested artists are asked to donate a "pumpkin themed' original work of art - anything from photography to sculpture - to the Snow Goose Restaurant by October 14th. (No real pumpkins, please!)  Pieces will be judged by the public in a People's Choice Award, the winner of which will take home both certificates!

All artwork will be displayed at the Snow Goose between October 15th and October 29th, and auctioned on Friday evening, October 29th.  All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Alaska Guardian Angel Program.  This organization of the Armed Services YMCA program provides emergency assistance to military families in need.

Please contact Lucy Kadarauch at the Snow Goose by September 30th to be put on the official artist list! (907) 277-7727 or lucykadarauch@gmail.com.

Thanks!

Exciting Friday Events and a Berliner Weisse for Every Pallet

Berliner Weisse:  A traditional German wheat beer dating back to the 16th century, with an “intentionally sharp, sourish finish derived from the use of a lactic culture as well as a more conventional yeast” according to Michael Jackson, author of Ultimate Beer.  The unique brew is traditionally mixed with flavored syrups (though never by the brewer) such as raspberry or woodruff (a small herb native to northern Germany).  Here at the Snow Goose Restaurant and Sleeping Lady Brewing Co., we’ve decided to put our own twist on this classic brew.  September’s First Flight will offer our own Berliner Weisse with blueberry flavoring as well as the traditional raspberry flavoring; we think it gives it a bit of an ‘Alaskan’ touch!

Speaking of Alaskana, it is yet again First Friday and local artist Ivy Bowler will soon be showing off her artwork in the pub!  Tonight’s showcase features Bowler’s creative digital photography in an exhibit entitled “Layers of Recall: A show About Visual Associations.”  Bowler grew up in Homer, AK, and went on to study film and experimental photography at the University of Alaska Anchorage.  She recently began exploring digital photography, the primary media used in this month’s show.

As if that weren’t enough excitement for one night, the Arctic Sirens Cabaret will also be performing in the Snow Goose Theatre at 7:30pm, kicking off their third season!  The cast is well rehearsed, the band is in tune, and the stage is set for a show filled with talented singers, great musicians, and some overall great entertainment!  Come by the Goose tonight and this weekend – so much to do, so much fun to be had!

Happy Labor Day Weekend everyone!

Sunshine (?), Original Spray Paint and Acrylic Art, and Our Very First IPA Flight!

I can feel it – August is going to be a good month.  OK, so it’s pouring rain now, but I have high hopes!  Just wait… we’ll have a little more sun before the season slips into fall – if nothing else, all this wetness will make for good skiing this year.  (I’m committed to thinking happy thoughts!!)

Maybe all this positive energy is due to the fact that today is Friday…Ahhh Friday!  And not just any Friday, but a FIRST Friday – my favorite kind by far.  I can hardly withhold my excitement for our August First Flight – this may prove to be the most inspired trio to date, featuring three IPAs, ranging from “Tiny,” our light version at 3% alcohol, all the way to the massive “Hop Bomb” (a.k.a. “Black IPA”).  The name’s no joke, if it’s bitter you’re looking for, then you will be fully satisfied with this brew.  Though deep brown/black in color, this unique beer lacks the malty and nutty flavors expected in such a dark drink, and instead goes straight for the hop punch.  It’s a must-try.

Speaking of things that should definitely be on your short list, our August First Friday Artist, Matt Yoder has just installed his showcase upstairs in the pub and it’s looking great!  The effect is deep and dramatic, with splashes of bright color mixed with inspired images.  Yoder began his artist career by ‘tagging’ bridges and abandoned buildings, eventually graduating to commissioned works.  “It’s about constantly trying new mediums and styles, and progressing!” explains Yoder.

The reception will begin at 6:00 pm tonight (August 6th) and the art will be up all month.

See you at the Goose!

First Friday Art by Dorene M. Lorenz and a Great New First Flight!

I can hardly believe that another month has passed us by!  As I’m sure you well know, this can only mean one thing… time for another awesome First Friday art show and our new First Flight tasters at the Goose!  Greg is in the brewery as I speak concocting another doubtlessly delicious brew, after which he’s going to give me a run-down of the new picks! (I hope he brings samples).

While we wait I’ll tell you about our wonderful local First Friday artist, Dorene M. Lorenz.  Lorenz is a fourth generation Sewardite who learned to paint on her family’s 83ft. wooden boat while fishing in Resurrection Bay, and recalls that as a child she “didn’t know painting wasn’t a ‘normal’ part of fishing.”  Lorenz will display her colorful metallic acrylics in a showcase entitled “Kenai Fjords Underwater Ballet” this Friday at the Snow Goose.  The reception begins at 5:00 pm – be sure to stop by on your downtown art walk!

Of course, no First Friday art can be properly enjoyed without a First Flight beer in hand!  Luckily, Greg has now emerged from the brewery and has a great line-up planned, starting with the Extra Pale Ale.  At 6% alcohol this beer is a “bigger version of a pale ale” with a malty sweetness.  All the hop character in this brew comes from last minute additions of Simcoe hops, influencing the aroma without giving it the bitterness of an IPA.  Next up is the EPO, a 3.5% hoppy hybrid of a Belgian Whit Beer and an American Cream Ale.  This brew is highly carbonated with a slight citrusy taste – great for the deck!  Lastly we’re offering the ’09 Espresso Bock.  This dark beer uses Kaladi Red Goat coffee beans to give it a faint coffee flavor and aroma.

Hope you can make it tomorrow; both the artwork and the brews are sure to be superb!

Snow Goose Restaurant and Sleeping Lady Brewing Co. Named One of “150 Perfect Places to Have a Beer”

The Snow Goose Restaurant and Sleeping Lady Brewing Co. was recently recognized by All About Beer Magazine as one of the “150 Perfect Places to Have a Beer” in the month’s special publication entitled Beer Traveler.  We were the only Alaskan establishment to earn a spot on the select list, which was made up of many other well-known breweries, brewpubs, beer bars, and festivals all over the world!

All About Beer Magazine is a publication that delivers what it promises – from beer tasting to beer brewing, to beer news and beer festivals, it’s the go-to reference for beer connoisseurs and novices alike.  The magazine’s special publication, Beer Traveler focuses on beer destinations and must-see venues that any brew lover would be thrilled to visit.  “150 Perfect Places to Have a Beer” follows All About Beer’s 2008 article, “125 Places to Have a Beer Before You Die,” (Sleeping Lady Brewing Co. was also listed) which author Rick Lyke boasts “resulted in the single highest number of reader responses in the 30-year history of the magazine.”

Sleeping Lady Brewing Co.’s Head Brewer, Greg Mills said of the recognition “It is an honor to be considered amongst so many great breweries and beer festivals around the world… I’m looking forward to visiting some of the other places on the list!

Come check out the Snow Goose Restaurant and Sleeping Lady Brewing Co. and enjoy a fresh, cool brew on the deck and see why we have gained recognition as one of the best places world-wide to enjoy a pint!

Gorgeous Weather and June First Friday & First Flight!

It’s officially summertime and the gorgeous weather (aside from today) is here!  The deck is open and hopping and soon the roof will be set up as well.  It’s undoubtedly a great place to relax on a warm day with a cool brew in hand, overlooking beautiful downtown Anchorage and the inlet!  Keep an eye out for our new summer menu, too – rumored to be in circulation next week.

This Friday is First Friday!  The Snow Goose is hosting our 2nd art showcase of the season, featuring beautiful landscape images by photographer Hope E. Bauman.   A reception will begin at 6:00 tomorrow, and photographs will be on display up in our pub all month long.  Make the Goose your first stop on your downtown art tour!

While you’re here, be sure to sample some of our newest and tastiest brews on tap for our monthly First Flight event.  Among others, we’ll be featuring a Susitna Hefeweizen: a classic German wheat beer with subtle banana and clove aromas; a Dark Imperial Saison: a dry, spicy brew with a smooth finish, aged in red wine barrels for over a year; and O.D.B.: a Belgian inspired barley wine aged in retired American oak barrels and under-attenuated giving the beer a port-like quality.

Don't miss the wonderful show and a chance to try some of our unique new brews!

Great Saturday Night Entertainment and our 1000th Beer!

Music is in the air… This Saturday, April 10th, we’re excited to be hosting local folk/alternative artist, Marian Call, who will perform her last concert in Anchorage for the season before taking off on a national tour.  Accompanied by a full band, the concert will feature songs inspired by Alaska. If it’s anything like her last show, it won’t disappoint - Doors open at 7:30 - Get your tickets early!

Also this week, we are very proud to announce that we’ve officially tapped our 1000th beer!  An American Strong Ale, this retro-brew is based on our original Scottish Ale recipe, and boasts a brown sugarcane taste that is masterfully balanced with a hoppy citrus finish.  Its rich yet bright flavor makes for a very smooth, unique brew that is already proving to be a new (old) favorite.  Come try a pint!

Lastly, while it may not look like it at the moment… spring is just around the corner, and we are oh-so-excited to see it arrive. We’ve already had a few brave souls venture out on our deck to enjoy the fresh air, and it won’t be long before we can officially open up both decks for the summer – counting down the days!
